Dying Matters film screened at Cannes
A short film commissioned by Dying Matters to raise awareness of the importance of making end of life wishes clear was selected to be screened at this year's Cannes film festival.
"I Didn't Want That' was released as part of Dying Matters Awareness Week 2012. It was created to act as a stimulus for making end of life wishes clear and helping to change the way the nation thinks about death. 'I Didn't Want That' was shown at the annual Cannes Film Festival in May as part of the short film section.
Claire Pope, editor and production manager at Flix Films, who produced 'I Didn't Want That', said that being picked for the prestigious film festival is regarded as a "seal of approval". She added: "Showing a film at Cannes means it may be seen by film producers and distributors across the globe. In our case, it was also a chance to raise awareness about death, dying and bereavement with an audience who were unconnected with healthcare and end of life care and who, on the whole, were a fairly young audience."
Audience members included film teachers, actors, film producers, directors, distributors and journalists.

Leon Ancliffe, pictured left, Flix Films managing director, said: "What was great to see was that people were leaving the screening and talking about their own end of life wishes. It struck a cord with people and often when we met someone and got talking about the film, they'd already heard about it from someone else.
"We've been getting emails from people since the festival telling us how much they valued not just the film but talking to us afterwards about the issues surrounding dying, death and bereavement. People who are relatively young were walking away and thinking 'I didn't know that my death will have such a huge effect on not just me but my family and I need to make sure that I look after them in my death'. That's what is so great about film, it's a vehicle to get your message across, a vehicle to make a difference and we're just so pleased that it is."
This is not the first time a Dying Matters film has been screened at Cannes. 'Dying to Know', a drama about the difficulties and benefits of discussing end of life wishes, also produced by Flix Films, was chosen to be shown at the 2012 Cannes Festival and received a rapturous reception.
