Join us for Rankin death exhibition discussion

14 August 2013
Dying Matters has teamed up with National Museums Liverpool to hold an event exploring the powerful issues raised by internationally renowned photographer Rankin’s exhibition Alive: in the Face of Death

The exhibition, which is being hosted by The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, sets out to explore and challenge perceptions of death through more than 70 photographs of people living with a terminal illness, as well as those who have faced death and survived, and those who work within the death industry.

Dying Matters has actively supported Alive: In the Face of Death, which opened during this year's Dying Matters Awareness Week, since pre-launch. Those photographed include Dying Matters and National Council for Palliative Care champion Mandy Paine - pictured, above, with Rankin, and Jim Edwards, who, together with his wife, Jo, has been involved in several aspects of our work. As visitors exit the exhibition they are also greeted by a Dying Matters information board and a selection of our resources.

Panellists at the joint  'In Conversation: Dying Matters' event in September are: Sandra Penketh, Director of Art Galleries for National Museums Liverpool; Mandy Paine; Sam Turner, Director of Stakeholder Relations, the Dying Matters Coalition; and John Gorkowski from Woodlands Hospice. They will be exploring the amazing public response to the exhibition and discussing how it has helped break down taboos around dying, death and bereavement.

Mandy Paine will talk about the process of working with Rankin as well as a personal perspective on the impact of participating in the exhibition. John Gorkowski will discuss the role of arts in palliative care. Following short talks by each of the speakers the event will conclude with an open discussion.

Joe Levenson, Director of Communications at Dying Matters, said: "We’re delighted to be working with National Museums Liverpool to co-host this exciting event at the Walker Art Gallery. It promises to be a thought-provoking afternoon and we hope as many people as possible register to attend, and also take the opportunity to visit Rankin’s excellent ALIVE: In the Face of Death exhibition while it is still on."

'In Conversation: Dying Matters' is at 2-3.30pm on 5 September 2013 at The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. It is free to attend but advance booking is essential by calling 0151 478 4199 or at the welcome desk at The Walker Art Gallery. Please advise of any mobility requirements at the time of booking.

Alive: in the Face of Death is at The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool until 15 September. Admission free.
