Dying Matters launches groundbreaking film
The film, 'I Didn’t Know That', looks at Muslim traditions related to dying and death. It was developed with the Birmingham Central Mosque and the Birmingham Muslim Burial Committee.
'I Didn’t Know That', which was produced by Flix Films, is part of a pioneering joint programme of work by Dying Matters and the Heart of England NHS Trust aimed at improving the care people receive at the end of their life.
Claire Henry, Chief Executive of the Dying Matters coalition and the National Council for Palliative Care, said: “Unless we improve our understanding of the individual needs of all people who are dying and of their families, we won’t be able to ensure that people who are dying get the care and support that is right for them and we risk causing further distress at what is inevitably an upsetting time.
"We therefore very much hope that 'I Didn’t Know That' becomes required viewing for all those involved in providing end of life care and bereavement support, not only because it will help ensure the needs of Muslim people are better met but because it serves to remind us that everyone deserves to be treated as an individual, regardless of regardless of age, gender, diagnosis, belief or culture."
Dawn Chaplin, Head Nurse Patient Experience/Clinical Dean for Nursing Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, added: "We're delighted that this excellent film is being launched and believe it will make a major contribution to the care and support we can offer. Although the film focuses on how to meet the needs of the Muslim community, the lessons from it are universal. It’s only through engaging with people who are dying and their families that we will truly be able to provide the right end of life care and bereavement support.”
Gulam Teladia of the Birmingham Muslim Burial Committee welcomed the film, describing it as “an excellent DVD, which is educational and informative for families and health professionals".
