Hearing about others' experiences can be helpful when dealing with death and bereavement. Do you have a personal experience that you'd feel comfortable sharing with the campaign? If so, let us know...
This is something I passionately want to see brought out in the open and discussed more.
My terminally ill son collapsed and was ultimately resuscitated and intubated. The next two weeks were terrible, culminating in choosing the day he was to die.
With more information, planning and open discussion this need not have happened and his death would likely have happened at the point of collapse or shortly after.
The 'Do Not Resuscitate' conversation needs to be talked about more to avoid the protracted death my son had. I am in a position four years down the line to be able to see how end of life counselling should be gently introduced so much sooner into the terminally ill conversation.
The Dying Matters Coalition is led by the National Council for Palliative Care,
the umbrella charity for end of life care in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
