Why Dying Matters to Me

Dying means different things to different people. However, most of us share a common goal: to die a good death. In Why Dying Matters to Me, a new film from the Dying matters Coalition, people from different walks of life talk about why the way in which they will die is important to them. The film was released to coincide with Dying Matters Awareness Week, which ran from 16-22 May.

Sam Turner, head of development for the National Council for Palliative Care, the umbrella body for Dying Matters, said that the participants were given the freedomto speak about whatever they wanted in relation to death.

"The only direction we gave the participants was to start their talking head by saying, 'Dying matters to me because'.

"We understand that everyone's motivations for speaking are different so wanted to capture why dying matters to different people," she said.

Many of those who participated in the film were put in touch with Sam through Dying Matters' partner charities, in particular People in Partnership and People Bank. Video diary rooms open to the public were also set up at national and regional NCPC and Dying Matters events.

Sam anticipates that the film will appeal to a wide range of people.

"We hope there will be a small snippet that almost everyone can relate to and it will encourage more people to talk openly," she said.
